SA Leads the Nation in Vehicle Theft Reduction
October 2014
Building on the nation's strong performance in 2012/13,
vehicle theft has once again fallen in 2013/14 to record lows. The year saw an
overall decline in passenger/light commercial (PLC) theft of 7 per cent, with
short term theft alone down 9 per cent. The past 12 months has revealed a
gradual shift to theft of newer vehicles; however, cars more than 10 years old
remain the most commonly targeted.
According to the recent National Motor Vehicle Theft
Reduction Council, Vehicle theft maintains a downward trend comparing 2013 to
2014 with South Australia leading the
nation with an 18% drop in total vehicle theft over last year.
2013/14 National Summary
• Passenger & Light Commercial (PLC) thefts down 7 per
cent.
• Short term theft down 9 per cent.
• Profit-motivated theft up 1 per cent.
• Recovery rate 75 per cent.
• Lowest number of
PLC thefts since the 1970s.

Congratulations to the South Australian Community including
SAPOL and the Neighbourhood Watch for their part in having the nation’s greatest
percentage reduction in vehicle theft.
